The Happiness Advantage. A New State of Mind for Financial and Life Success.

Money Talks with Lynn Kitchen and Patricia Barnett EP 146.

What if the secret to greater financial clarity isn’t just a new strategy—but a new state of mind?

Lynn Kitchen ImageIt’s easy to think of financial growth in terms of numbers—budgets, returns, timelines. And yes, those matter. But after decades of mentoring individuals and couples through wealth-building, retirement planning, and investment strategy, I’ve come to see something deeper:

Financial success begins with how you think and feel.

That’s why I’m so excited about my guest and good friend, Patricia Barnett.  Patricia is a bestselling author, international speaker, performance coach, and the creator of Elevate, a mindset and performance program rooted in real transformation. She’s someone who understands—through her own remarkable journey—that breakthroughs don’t begin on the outside. They begin within.

Today, Patricia shares her signature framework:

“The 7 Keys to a Happier, Healthier, and More Productive You.”

At the heart of her message is this simple but powerful idea:

Happiness isn’t just a mood—it’s a transformative mindset. And it changes everything.

The Research Behind the Mindset

We’re not just talking inspiration here—we’re talking evidence.

Gallup reports that only 31% of U.S. employees are engaged at work, the lowest level in over a decade. This collective state has earned a name: The Great Gloom. It’s affecting not just productivity, but overall well-being—and yes, financial outcomes.

Meanwhile, a study from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School shows that happy employees are 13% more productive. And Morgan Stanley reports that 1 in 5 adults say financial stress directly affects their work performance, with many losing over three hours per week to worry and distraction.

The takeaway? A positive emotional state doesn’t just make you feel better—it helps you perform better. In life. In business. And in finance.

From Breakdown to Breakthrough

patriciaOne of the most moving moments in our interview was when Patricia shared a story from early in her journey.

More than 25 years ago, she faced a life-threatening illness. Her prognosis was dire. At her lowest point, a friend sent her a “miracle” in the mail: a gratitude journal.

Patricia rolled her eyes. “I didn’t need a journal,” she said. “I needed a miracle.”

But what she discovered was this:

“Inside of gratitude—that’s where miracles reside.”

Let that sink in.

That small act of noticing what was still good—despite her circumstances—marked the beginning of a mindset shift. A new state of mind. And that emotional clarity became the foundation for every breakthrough that followed.

If you are the one person who needs to hear this today, then Patricia and I are so happy.

Why This Matters for Your Financial Life

As a financial mentor, I’ve seen how often people try to fix their money problems with spreadsheets alone—ignoring the emotional drivers underneath.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • When people feel anxious, they make reactive decisions.
  • When people feel emotionally stuck, their financial progress stalls.
  • When people feel empowered, they take bold, consistent action.

That shift—from fear to focus, from overwhelm to clarity—doesn’t happen in your bank account. It happens in your mind.

And the shift Patricia teaches? That’s what I call emotional wealth.

What Is Emotional Wealth?

Emotional wealth is the inner resilience, clarity, and calm that allows you to navigate both opportunities and challenges with confidence. It’s what helps you stay grounded when the world feels shaky, and make thoughtful decisions even under pressure.

It doesn’t mean ignoring stress—it means managing it in a way that supports growth instead of sabotaging it.

This is the essence of Patricia’s work. It’s not just personal development. It’s a life upgrade.

Patricia’s Seven Keys to Happiness

Patricia’s Seven Keys to a Happier, Healthier, and More Productive You are grounded in daily action. Here are three that impacted me most:

  1. Gratitude First

Gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about focusing your mind on what is working—even in small ways.

I now jot down three financial wins each morning. Some days, it’s as simple as staying committed to my plan or resisting an unnecessary purchase. That practice shifts me from scarcity to possibility.

Gratitude creates room for abundance.

  1. Breathe Before You Decide

Science backs what Patricia teaches: even a single deep breath increases oxygen to the brain, enhancing clarity and calm.

When I’m facing a big decision—especially in turbulent financial moments—I pause and breathe. Just three deep breaths. That space makes all the difference.

This isn’t just self-care. It’s smart strategy.

  1. Celebrate Every Win

This is where Patricia truly shines. She is the queen of celebration—and she lives it. Every conversation, every coaching session, and even every email ends with her signature:

“Cheers and TA-DA!”

I always love saying this out loud with Patricia!

Why? Because celebration is more than a good vibe—it’s a brain boost. Celebrating triggers dopamine, which fuels motivation, energy, and momentum.

As Patricia says:

“Whenever we celebrate, we elevate. And when we elevate, we see more to celebrate.”

Now, I celebrate everything—paying off a debt, sticking to a plan, staying calm in uncertainty. Each one is proof: I’m moving forward. And that builds real confidence.

Happiness Is the New Currency

Let’s connect the dots. Happiness:

  • Increases cognitive function
  • Reduces emotional reactivity
  • Sharpens problem-solving
  • Deepens communication
  • Strengthens consistency

These are not just personal benefits—they’re financial strengths. Whether you’re managing a household budget, leading a business, or building long-term investments, happiness as a state of readiness is an asset.

Why I’m Weaving This Into What I Teach

I’ve long taught the principles of wise investing, diversification, and portfolio strategy. But over the years, I’ve realized: without emotional clarity, those tools fall flat.

That’s why I now recommend mindset practices like Patricia’s as part of the full financial picture.

Because your portfolio is only as effective as the person managing it. And when that person is emotionally strong, grounded, and focused? That’s when wealth takes root.

Start Here. Start Small.

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. You just need to begin.

Here’s how:

  • Write down one thing you’re grateful for.
  • Take three deep breaths before your next financial decision.
  • Celebrate one small action you took today.

These habits might seem small—but they are powerful. They are the seeds of emotional wealth, and they are the foundation of sustainable financial strength.

Final Thought: This Is Your Time

Patricia said something that has stayed with me:

“If you’re here, it’s for a reason. This is your prime time.”

Whether you’re just getting started, rebuilding after a challenge, or reaching for a new level—this moment is your opportunity to anchor into a new mindset. One that supports your well-being, your peace, and your prosperity.
