Lynn Kitchen’s Market Sense EP 143

Is the sky falling?

Have you been feeling like the financial sky is falling lately? You’re not alone. Many investors are watching the markets with growing concern as sharp declines make it feel like it’s “raining knives” out there. As your financial advocate with decades of experience in money management, I want to share some insights that can help you navigate these choppy economic waters with confidence.

Understanding Today’s Market Reality

Let me start with an old Wall Street saying: “Don’t catch a falling knife.” This simple phrase captures the danger of rushing to buy stocks in a declining market before signs of stabilization appear. It’s wisdom that feels especially relevant right now.

Looking at the S&P 500’s performance over the past few years tells an important story. We experienced a strong bull market from 2020 through 2022, followed by what I call a “normal correction” that lasted about a year. Then in 2023, we watched the index climb to a peak of 6,155 before dropping sharply to just below 5,000 – a decline that rightfully makes investors nervous.

According to recent data from J.P. Morgan Asset Management, the average intra-year market decline over the past 20 years has been about 14%, yet the S&P 500 has finished the year with positive returns in 17 of those 20 years. This shows us that volatility is normal, even in healthy markets.

 The New Pattern: Sawtooth Markets

What we’re experiencing now is something I call a “sawtooth” pattern – sharp declines followed by swift recoveries. This isn’t your grandparents’ market where trends developed slowly over time. Today’s market moves faster, hits harder, and recovers fast, much of it fueled by computerized program trading.

volatile markets

Recent research from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis shows that market volatility has increased by approximately 35% in the past decade compared to historical averages. This new reality requires a different approach to investing – one based on patience, careful observation, and strategic timing.

Finding Support in Turbulent Times

One key concept that helps me navigate these waters is understanding “support levels” – price points where a declining market might find a floor and attract buyers. Right now, I’m watching a potential support level around 4,800 on the S&P 500, which corresponds to the high point of the previous bull cycle.

These support levels can signal possible buying opportunities, but – and this is crucial – only after the market shows signs of confirming these levels. Patience is your friend here.

We’re Experiencing a Tectonic Economic Shift

What we’re living through isn’t just a typical market cycle – we’re experiencing what I call a “tectonic economic shift.” The rules that governed markets for decades are being rewritten, and this requires us to adapt our strategies accordingly.

Look at companies like Tesla and Nvidia as examples. Tesla once soared to $400 before experiencing significant pullbacks. Nvidia reached $135 before facing a similar retracement. These “parabolic” movements – dramatic upswings followed by sharp declines – are becoming more common in today’s market environment.

According to data from Morningstar, stocks that experience parabolic moves typically retrace 50-61.8% of their gains before finding stability. Understanding these patterns can help us better prepare for market movements instead of simply reacting to them.

Three Pillars for Smarter Investing

As your financial advocate, I believe in empowering you with strategies that work in today’s unique market conditions. Here are the three pillars I recommend:

Lynn Kitchen

  1. Education and Mentorship

The most successful investors never stop learning. A study by Dalbar found that the average investor underperformed the S&P 500 by nearly 5% annually over a 20-year period, largely due to emotional decision-making and lack of market knowledge. This gap highlights the value of ongoing education.

Through my Wealth Builders Express program, I provide the mentorship and a community learning environment that helps investors understand complex market dynamics in simple terms. We focus on answering the two questions that matter most: “Is it time to buy?” and “What should I buy?”

  1. Quality Over Speed

In volatile markets, the quality of your investments matters more than ever. Research from Bank of America shows that companies with strong balance sheets outperformed those with weaker financials by an average of 7% annually during market downturns.

I help my clients identify these quality investments – companies with solid fundamentals that can weather economic storms and emerge stronger on the other side. This focus on quality creates resilience in your portfolio when market volatility strikes.

  1. Building a Strategic Reserve

Having cash reserves ready for deployment is crucial in today’s market environment. According to a BlackRock study, investors who maintained 10-15% cash positions were able to capitalize on market corrections and outperformed fully invested portfolios by an average of 3.2% during recovery periods.

I guide my clients in building appropriate cash reserves so they can act from a position of strength when opportunities arise, rather than reacting from fear when markets decline.

How I Can Make a Difference as Your Financial Advocate

You might be wondering what sets my approach apart from other financial advisors. The difference lies in my commitment to your complete financial well-being, not just your investment returns.

Personalized Strategy: Unlike one-size-fits-all approaches, I develop strategies tailored to your specific goals, risk tolerance, and timeline. A study by Vanguard estimated that this personalized approach can add approximately 3% in net returns for investors over time.

Emotional Discipline: Financial markets trigger powerful emotions that can lead to poor decisions. As your advocate, I provide the objective guidance needed to stay disciplined during market turbulence. Research from DALBAR shows that emotionally driven investment decisions cost the average investor nearly half their potential returns over time.

Continuous Adaptation: Today’s markets require constant vigilance and adaptation. Through my Wealth Builders Express program, I keep you informed about changing market conditions and help you adjust your strategy accordingly.

Community Support: Investing can feel lonely and overwhelming. My approach includes connecting you with a community of like-minded investors who share insights, experiences, and support. Harvard Business School research shows that investors who participate in investment communities make more informed decisions and experience less anxiety during market volatility.

“Wouldn’t you like to be the kind of person that has a calm confidence about your next decisions?” This question captures what I aim to help my clients achieve. In today’s uncertain economic climate, that calm confidence comes from being prepared, educated, and strategically positioned.

The investors who thrive in the coming years won’t be those who can predict market movements with perfect accuracy – no one can do that consistently. The successful investors will be those who understand the new patterns, prepare strategically, and act decisively when opportunities present themselves.
